global learning

Overview

Microsoft Partners in Learning is a global initiative designed to actively increase access to technology and improve its use in learning. The goal is to help schools gain better access to technology, foster innovative approaches to pedagogy and teacher professional development and provide education leaders with the tools to envision, implement and manage change.

Our Relationship

Partners in Learning called on Collaborative’s expertise in knowledge management to help build strategic partnerships. Collaborative developed a process and tools for analyzing partnership opportunities, which includes development of a comprehensive framework for partnership analysis, extensive research on potential opportunities and strategic recommendations for moving ideas to action.

Our Ideas
Overview

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills is a national  organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student. As the United States continues to compete in a global  economy that demands innovation, P21 and its members provide tools and resources to help the U.S. education system keep up by fusing the 3Rs and 4Cs (Critical thinking and problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity and innovation). While leading districts and schools are already doing this, P21 advocates for local, state and federal policies that support this approach for every school.

New Global Citizens gives middle and high school students a global perspective, an opportunity to create change, and the skills needed to thrive in the 21st Century. They seek to enable young people to become global citizens who embrace their critical role as leaders, philanthropists and engaged change agents.

Education is at the forefront of a national and international debate about how we should better prepare our children and youth to become engaged global citizens.

In January 2012, more than 300 leaders from across the country will gather in San Francisco to explore how expanded learning opportunities can help prepare youth for college, careers and life in a global society. This annual meeting convenes state teams from the C.S. Mott Foundation-funded networks to focus on leading-edge ideas and policies in education and expanded learning.

National and international experts—including Kai-Ming Cheng of the University of Hong Kong—will discuss themes such as global learning, STEM and higher education. Teams will work together during engaging sessions and interactive experiences on plans to bring new ideas back to their states.

Statewide afterschool networks connect key decision-makers and resources in 39 states to develop and sustain high quality afterschool programs. The work of the networks is to provide robust bridges between leaders of schools, communities and families to better support students. School-based / school-linked afterschool programs help educators and others rethink the school day and school year, so that three vital resources—public education, community and time—fully support student learning, youth development and life-long learning opportunities.

Collaborative has coordinated the SAN network’s convenings, web presence, and technical assistance since 2002. The network is framed around three key goals:

  • Create a sustainable structure of statewide, regional and local partnerships, particularly school-community partnerships, focused on supporting policy development at all levels.
  • Support the development and growth of statewide policies that will secure the resources needed to sustain new and existing afterschool programs.
  • Support statewide systems to ensure programs are of high quality.
